The Passage season 2: Release date and everything you need to know (2024)

Note: this article contains spoilers for The Passage season one (and the book).

Fox’s vampire drama The Passage is based on Justin Cronin’s novel of the same name, and is the first in a three-part trilogy.

The series follows 10-year-old Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), who becomes an orphan at the beginning of the show after her mother dies from a drug overdose and subsequently finds herself on the run with FBI agent Brad Wolgast (Saved By The Bell's Mark-Paul Gosselaar).

Wolgast is tasked with taking Amy to a covert medical facility so that a group of scientists can run tests on her as part of Project Noah, a programme which aims to wipe out all disease by boosting the human immune system – and they’re half way there, sort of.

The patients/convicts under their watchful eyes are all immune to Ebola, AIDS and every other disease under the sun – except that the treatment has also turned them into blood-sucking leeches, referred to as virals.

But Amy, with her younger, less-developed immune system, could hold the answer.

After agreeing to bring the young girl to the facility, Wolgast has a change of heart and decides that experimenting on a child probably isn’t a particularly moral thing to do. The pair strike up a strong bond almost immediately, and there’s no way that he’s putting his new companion in harm’s way. But things do not go according to plan.

So, will there be a second season of The Passage, and what can fans expect from the future of the show?

With two more books still to unpack – The Twelve and The City of Mirrors – there’s a lot more ground to cover, which means there’s every chance that there will be another season, possibly two or more. And after a positive reception from both the public and critics following the show's first outing, we’re feeling hopeful.

Speaking to Variety about the two-hour season finale, creator Liz Heldens said: "Jumping 100 years in the future and all of the questions that raises is one of the better cliffhangers of my career. It just seemed like such a huge, game-changing reset.

"For the people who read the book and love the book...we wanted to show the wall of the Colony. We wanted to really send that signal, but also you'll notice it’s kind of in silhouette; you don’t see too much detail.

"We wanted to really allow ourselves time to get with our production designer and really make that wall look the way we wanted to look for season two."

Heldens also spoke about what the future holds for Amy: "In Season two...she’s got one foot in one world and one foot in the other one, and she is basically a product of her mother and her relationship with Wolgast. She is making her world better, but it is always going to be a struggle with her."

So while nothing is set in stone at the moment, it sounds hopeful that this won't be the end of the road for The Passage.

Here’s everything you need to know .

The Passage season 2 release date: When will it return?

Fox haven’t yet officially confirmed whether we’re going to get a second season, so we don’t have a release date at the moment.

But if it’s given the thumbs up, we would expect it to air at the end of 2019/early 2020.

The Passage season 2 cast: Who will return?

Note: last chance to avoid book spoilers

While the first season focuses on the present, charting the relationship between Brad and Amy, as well as showing how the virus manages to break out, the next season, if we get one, fast-forwards 100 years to a time when the virals rule a post-apocalyptic world.

That significant time jump means that we are likely to see a lot of new faces, but also some old ones too, including both Gosselaar as Brad and Sidney as Amy.

Heldens told Variety that she feels "this show is Wolgast and Amy", which means that both of them will be returning if it's given the go ahead.

"I just think people connect to TV by characters — that’s how you live and die by the show: because you love the characters," she added. "And so we always knew we wanted to find a way to bring him [Brad] back."

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media about the difference between the books and the TV show, Gosselaar said: "My character passes away pretty quickly in the first book. That's not going to happen with my character [in the series]. I’m not just there for the first season. I’m signed on for the next six years."

Heldens also revealed that Clark Richards (Vincent Piazza) and Jonas Lear (Henry Ian Cusick) are primed to return. Just as the relationship between Brad and Amy is integral to the adaptation, so is the bond between Richards and Shauna Babcock (Brianne Howey). He is her "one person".

"They are linked; that is ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ over there," she said.

In terms of Lear, Heldens said: "There was something really great to us about him starting the episode wanting to kill himself and ending the episode by giving himself a virus that may make him live forever."

And then there's Lila (Emmanuelle Chriqui), who managed to get her hands on the virus that Nichole Sykes (Caroline Chikezie) had been working on. She doesn't become a viral, but one of the "super people", which means she could return, but she also might not.

"Even if you are superhuman, that doesn’t mean you can survive bombs dropping," added Heldens. "We wanted it to be a big question mark of who is going to come back and who is not going to come back.

"Season two is going to be a lot about people trying to find one another again."

And we would of course expect Jamie McShane to return as Dr Tim Fanning, along with a number of the other virals.

Speaking about the big creative changes that distinguish the TV show from the book, Gosselaar said: "My biggest concern is that people who have read the books don’t give the show a chance. They’re expecting the show to be word for word what they read on the page.

"I’ll say it right now: it’s not. We had to make changes to move the story along for the screen. Is it better? No. Is it worse? No. it’s our version. It’s our interpretation.

"I hope that the fans of the books – because I’m one of them – can just set the books aside, and follow us on the journey of what we’ve created."

The Passage season 2 plot: What will happen?

"Now we’re fighting for our lives," Heldens told Variety. "Now we have virals attacking us; now the Colony is running out of batteries.

"There are very urgent present-tense problems, and so I do like the idea of really making a season more about the present-tense action because we have a ton of story to tell there."

The Passage season 2 trailer: When can we see it?

There's isn't currently a trailer available, but you’ll be the first to know when there is.
